PERTH’S HISTORIC bells will ring out again as the Fair City prepares for Christmas.
Carillon player Ian Cassells will return to Perth for lunchtime recitals at St John’s Kirk tomorrow and on December 21.
The carillon of bells was commissioned in 1934 and includes some kirk bells which date back to the 16th century.
Despite the completion of a new operating system last year, the best sounds can still only be achieved by hand using the original clavier.
Ian Cassells has been playing at St John’s for almost 20 years. He performs regularly in bell towers across the United Kingdom, but Perth remains a clear favourite.
“The beautiful tones of the upper bells are unparalleled in Britain, indeed they are the equal of the best in Europe,” he said.
The first recital, Advent Chimes, will include works selected for their “mysticism and expectancy”.One week later, Christmas Chimes will anticipate the joy of the festive feast.
Ian will include one of his one compositions in each recital.
