The architect of Dundee United’s golden era Jim McLean, cancer scientist Professor Sir David Lane and artist and playwright John Byrne are among the figures honoured at this summer’s graduations at Dundee University.
University principal Professor Pete Downes said, “Our honorary graduands reflect the nature of the university itself, celebrating local and Scottish achievement but also those made on the international stage.
“All of our honorary graduands are among the highest achievers, clearest thinkers and most respected voices in their respective fields.
“They are an inspiration to all our students.”
Mr McLean, United’s former chairman and manager, led the team to success at home and in Europe in the 1970s and 80s with a team of stars brought through the coaching system that he organised.
He won the Scottish Premier Division and two league cups and the acclaim of reaching the final of the UEFA Cup and semi-final of the European Cup.
Sir David, chief scientist of A-Star Cancer Research UK, was based in Dundee for 20 years.
Paisley-born Mr Byrne wrote The Slab Boys and Tutti Frutti.
They will receive honorary doctor of laws degrees along with:Dr Nick Lydon winner of the 2009 Lasker Award for his work in developing Gleevec, a drug that has saved thousands of lives. Dr Martin Mackay president of research and development at AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals. Professor James Murray senior scholar at Princeton University and founder of the Centre for Mathematical Biology. Dr Andom Ogbamariam director-general for research and human development for the Ministry of Health in Eritrea. Dr Kazem Behbehani director of the Dasman Diabetes Institute in Kuwait. Professor Douglas Hanahan director of the Swiss Institute for Experimental Cancer Research.The ceremonies take place from Wednesday, June 22, to Friday, June 24, in the Caird Hall.
