A life cut short has inspired staff from butchers’ shops across Dundee to sign up for the Race For Life.
Women from Scott Brothers shops will be taking part in memory of Dorothy Leith, known as Dot, who was just 46 when she lost her battle with breast cancer in January.
Dot left behind two daughters and her husband Alex, who is manager at Scott Brothers’ Nethergate shop and has been a butcher in the city for 30 years.
Long before she knew she had breast cancer, Dot participated in the annual Race for Life, organised by Cancer Research UK and supported by her employer Tesco.
In tribute to the popular wife and mother, Alex’s colleagues have decided to sign up for the race, which takes place on Sunday, June 19, at Camperdown Park. The charity hopes to raise £400,000 through the event.
One of Alex’s colleagues has a double reason to take part. Linda Stewart not only admired Dot but is supporting her own mother in her cancer fight.
Irene Stewart from Menzieshill was diagnosed on December 23 last year the same day Dot was told she was terminally ill and would not survive for long.
“My mum is going through radiotherapy now and that has given me a wee bit of encouragement to sign up for the Race for Life,” said Linda.
She will be joined by Kathleen Mathieson, Beth Wilkie and Sandra Mawhinney, who all work with Alex in the Nethergate shop. Over 20 women from Scott Brothers shops have agreed to take part.
“We have all worked with Alex for so long,” said Linda. “We were all really devastated when Dot died. She was a cracker of a person.”Women can enter Cancer Research UK’s 5k and 10k Race for Life at www.raceforlife.org or by calling 0871 641 1111.
