Pest controllers have been called out hundreds of times to deal with rats, mice, maggots and cockroaches at NHS Tayside properties.
Between January 2013 and October 2014, experts dealt with 199 incidents involving unwanted pests within the boundaries of Ninewells.
There were reports of rats in laboratories, maggots in a ward and laundry rooms, and a cockroach in the main kitchen during that time.
Pest control wardens were called to reports of mice in wards in both Strathmartine Hospital near Dundee and Stracathro Hospital in Brechin in January this year, while someone reported seeing rats in a ward at Royal Victoria Hospital in May.
Health bosses were forced to fork out nearly £79,000 to control the pests, although £40,000 alone was spent on ensuring future incidents were reduced.
Ross Graham, managing director of Graham Pest Control, the main contractor for NHS Tayside, said: “Staff call us out, even if they see a couple of ants in the corridor and we treat the problem within the hour.”
NHS Tayside said the £40,000 was “proactive spend” to remove the likes of rabbits and seagull nests from premises as well as buying electronic fly killers.
Head of property Mark Anderson said: “It is important to note that our records show what is reported to the pest control company at the time of call-out and not necessarily what is found, or not found as in some cases.
“NHS Tayside has more than 135 premises across the region and in each there are procedures for dealing with pest control problems.”
