Around 40 hopefuls were at Dundee University Student Union on Saturday to audition for Skint, the student soap opera that has already recruited Hollywood star Brian Cox and TV favourite Lorraine Kelly to its ranks.

The first student soap in Scotland, the first couple of episodes have already attracted a wide following.

Skint is the brainchild of Dundee University graduate Jordan Dunbar.

Taking a degree in international relations and politics, his interest in TV and film first manifested itself at the university when he set up its TV station.

Skint tells the story of student Dan, his tribulations with his girlfriend and the consequent efforts of his two flatmates to get him a new girlfriend.

There is just one episode to go for the film which receives its official premiere in December.

Current rector Brian Cox and former rector Lorraine Kelly will have their parts in the final episode. Brian plays a rogue scientist while Lorraine insisted she got to play a “real baddie.”

Jordan says there are plans for some other big-name stars to appear in Skint but he was remaining tight-lipped on Saturday.

He added that Skint was a showcase for talent from Dundee and beyond.

“We’ve had lots of people getting in touch wanting to produce and loads of local bands want to do the music.Talent”It’s all kinds of talent, both in front and behind the camera.”

Saturday’s acting auditions attracted a range of applicants.

Magnus McDonald (70), from Dalrymple Terrace, was trying for the role of an eccentric professor.

Magnus, who worked as a maintenance painter at Ninewells Hospital, has already dipped his toe in the acting pool as an extra.ExtraHe worked alongside Brian Cox in the 2001 film Strictly Sinatra and also did extra work in River City and Young Adam.

The youngest auditionee was 12-year old Thailee Rodger of Monifieth.

“Acting is basically my life,” said the bubbly Monifieth High School pupil, who is a member of the Dundee Rep youth theatre.

She has appeared in several school productions and features in adverts for fostering in Dundee, which are shown on TV and displayed on city buses.
