The Transport Research Laboratory has carried out world-leading analysis on mobile phone usage while driving. I found out how dangerously distracting talking and texting can be. The TRL Driving Simulator (or DigiCar) is a medium-sized Honda Civic. It is surrounded by four 3x4m projection screens giving 210 degrees of front vision and 60 degrees at the rear. The wraparound display allows for a normal driving experience, including use of wing mirrors. The road images are generated by four PCs running advanced software. Electric motors simulate heave, pitch and roll while engine noise and external road noise are provided via a stereo system.
