Police were amazed to find youths had dug an intricate network of tunnels in sand dunes near a golf course north of Aberdeen.
Police Scotland said officers were contacted by a concerned member of the public who reported that youths were digging holes in sand dunes beside the Newburgh Golf Club near Ellon.
When officers searched the area they were stunned to find a hidden entrance leading to an extensive set of tunnels.
They were dug deep into the dunes, shored up with pieces of wood.
Police say they were in an extremely dangerous and unstable condition and staff from the golf club used diggers to fill them in.
Officers warned the tunnels could have collapsed on the youths or caved in below anyone walking on the dunes.
They plan to visit the homes of the youths concerned to warn them against digging any more.
