The man widely regarded as Scotland’s top personal injury lawyer is looking at the claims of patients of a former Tayside surgeon.
Patrick McGuire of Thompson’s has worked exclusively in the field of personal injury and health and safety law since his legal career began, and is recognised as an expert in both areas.
Consultant neurological surgeon Professor Muftah Salem Eljamel was suspended from his post at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee last year after a patient underwent surgery on the wrong spinal disc.
He also had to step down from his teaching and research posts at Dundee University after the interim order by the Medical Practitioners’ Tribunal Service, and subsequently retired from the NHS.
The floodgates effectively opened when former Dundee radio DJ Patrick Kelly called for a public inquiry after claiming he was the victim of a “botched operation” in 2007 by Mr Eljamel.
More people have since said they were left with long-term health difficulties after surgery by Mr Eljamel.
Mr McGuire told The Courier: “I am aware Mr Kelly has been representing a group of victims and, if these people are the victims of negligence, we must ask if they are entitled to fair and just compensation.”
He added: “Every person who wants to come forward for advice, I will look at them, give advice and take appropriate cases forward.”
Mr Eljamel remains registered with the General Medical Council but without a licence to practise.
He has failed to respond to various requests for comment since his suspension.
