An attempt by RBS to cash in on Halloween fever has backfired horribly.
The bank’s social media team posted a lighthearted video on Facebook telling the tale of spooky goings-on at one of its oldest branches, Fort William.
However, they may have been too scared to look as a stream of customers reacted with horror suggesting the firm would be better getting its affairs in order than posting funny videos.
RBS received a £45.5bn public bailout during the height of the financial crisis in 2008, and its record of closing branches was also resurrected by furious commenters.
Debbie Moir posted: “This is not voices from the past but a warning of the future look out Fort William they will be closing your branch shortly just like they closed the one in Dufftown.”Paul Fraser added: “Yeah, the Stromness branch in Orkney just closed too (thanks very much) so you know where the ‘ghostly whispers’ are coming from.”
Val Nelson said: “Just closed newburgh branch and the mobile replacement is a joke! Can’t even give u an account balance??”, and Harry Dunkley said: “If its the same whispers as the invergordon branch staff heard I’d be worried. They closed our bank and left us with the start of a ghost town. Its already a grave yard for oil rigs.”
Other users questioned the bank’s priorities.
“Going into the film business then? With our money”, wrote an angry Bruce Ormond.
After the negative reaction, the video was briefly removed from the company’s Facebook page before being brought back from the dead.
And some customers were able to see the funny side, with Molly McCafferty joking: “Let me know if vault doors open themselves n I b up there in a shot”.
Helen Davidson added: “If you need to complain go through the proper channels. This is a bit of light hearted fun – lighten up folks.”
