Labour raises fears for loss of vital local policing

Policing in communities is being lost because of the Scottish Government, Labour’s justice spokesman has claimed.
Ex-senior officer Graeme Pearson quizzed Alex Salmond at Holyrood following The Courier’s revelation that police entitled to double time on public holidays are to be given the day off and officers from other divisions drafted in to cover their shifts to save cash.
He said: “Will the First Minister consider whether the cornerstone of policing success in Scotland since 1800, the maintenance of the policing of local communities by local police officers, is being abandoned as a result of the Government’s actions, despite repeated assurances that the national police service would deliver community policing across Scotland’s communities?”
However, Mr Salmond said “no negative impact is expected as a result of the redeployment”
