Barlinnie cells for vulnerable prisoners an ‘unacceptable risk’
ByThe Courier Reporter
Cells for vulnerable prisoners at HMP Barlinnie in Glasgow present “unacceptable risk” and need urgently upgraded, inspectors have said.
Chief Inspector of Prisons David Strang said a 2011 recommendation that they be upgraded was not met by the time of a follow-up inspection in July.
“Disappointingly, little progress has been made in ensuring that the safer cells are upgraded. This presents HMP Barlinnie and the SPS (Scottish Prison Service) with an unacceptable degree of risk,” the inspector said.
“I strongly urge the SPS to address this issue as a matter of some urgency.”
