Dundonians may be bracing themselves for swingeing cuts to public expenditure, but a significant amount of local men and women still admit to possessing a “secret stash”.
According to research conducted by the Bank of Scotland, Dundee ranked second in a national analysis of financially shrewd couples.
18% of people quizzed across the city confessed to having savings their partner was unaware of.
The research also suggests that 13% of Dundonians suspect their partner of not being completely honest when it comes to the state of their finances.
Data collected as part of the Bank of Scotland’s How Scotland Lives publication shows that more than one in 10 Scots have a secret stash.
According to the findings, women are the most secretive with just under a sixth, 14%, confessing to squirrelling money away from their partner.
Glaswegians topped the savings chart, with 19% of people living in Scotland’s biggest city admitting to hiding cash.
14% of Lothian couples confessed to saving money for a rainy day.
Mid-Scotland has the lowest number of “secret squirrels”, with just 4% of people living in the region holding a hidden pile.
Intriguingly, Fife ranks as having some of the most ‘suspicious’ other halves.
18% of Fifers said they suspected their partner was not being entirely truthful, whilst just 13% of Dundonians claimed they felt their other half was concealing cash.
Lothian couples proved to be the most suspicious, with 19% admitting to believing their partner had savings they were unaware of.
Rachel Bright, Head of Customer Service at Bank of Scotland, said that she was pleased to see couples taking a proactive approach to their finances.
