The Courier has enjoyed a 17.2% surge in readership over the past 12 months one of only three Scottish morning newspapers to increase its readership.
Only sister paper the Press and Journal recorded a bigger rise in reader numbers.
The figures were revealed in the latest National Readership Survey, which provides estimates of total readership numbers.
Its research shows The Courier’s average daily readership stood at 157,000 between October 2014 and September this year up from 134,000 the year before. The P&J’s readership rose from 145,000 to 176,000 over the same period.
The Courier’s success has been linked to improvements made to the paper, the efforts of its staff and an appetite for local news.
Richard Neville, editor of The Courier, said: “This is a great performance in what is a very difficult market these days.
“The choice for consumers about where they get their news is expanding every week it seems, but when it comes to local news the choice is still pretty straightforward. There is not another newspaper or a single website that can dedicate as many staff as we do to finding and reporting local news, features, events and issues.
“To go elsewhere would be to miss out.
“This performance reflects what our readers tell us about the value of local news, and it is testament to the hard work put in by all our staff.
“We will continue to build on that success by striving to improve both The Courier and www.thecourier.co.uk every day.”
