A number of staff and customers were prevented from leaving the shop but they were released unharmed. The incident began at about 6pm in a shop on the High Street between Jeffrey Street and North Bridge. At least eight police vehicles attended and the Royal Mile was closed off. Some of the police officers were armed. A police spokesman said later that the incident was “resolved peacefully”.
