A surge in toxic giant hogweed is not being properly tackled by the authorities, a politician has claimed.
Conservative MSP Murdo Fraser claims action to curb the spread of the invasive plant, which can cause horrific blistering and burns of the skin and even blindness, is not being brought forward quickly enough.
He wants councils to join the Scottish Government in a two-pronged attack against the unwanted weed and has called for an awareness campaign and tougher spraying programmes to kill off the non-native species.
“Clearly a new joined-up approach is required to stunt its growth,” he said.
