Scotland’s health service may be losing an estimated £110 million a year to fraud, according to an investigation.
The figure recorded by health boards is £2m over the last five years but the unit responsible for detecting crime in the NHS said that the true figure is likely to be many millions more.
The TV programme Scotland’s NHS Thieves reveals the amount of money defrauded has increased by 42% over the period.
The country’s largest health board, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, saw the value of detected fraud more than double.
Programme makers were given permission to film the work of NHS fraud investigators for the first time.
The team pursued doctors, dentists, nurses and patients suspected of conning £11 billion form NHS Scotland’s annual budget.
Scotland’s NHS Thieves is on BBC One Scotland on Wednesday night at 10.35pm.
