The family and friends of a man who died in a crash which was reported to police but not followed up for three days are due to gather for his funeral today.
John Yuill, 28, was killed when the Renault Clio he was driving left the M9 on July 5, although police did not respond to an initial report of the crash and only discovered the vehicle three days later on July 8 after a further call to the scene.
His girlfriend Lamara Bell, 25, was found in a critical condition in the passenger seat and died a few days later in hospital.
Mr Yuill’s funeral service will be held at St Frances Xaviers Church in Falkirk and a big turnout is expected.
His father John has released a statement ahead of the funeral via the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner (PIRC), which is looking at Police Scotland’s handling of the case.
“Today, we lay our beloved son, John Yuill, to rest after his tragic accident on the 5th of July 2015, which also claimed the life of his girlfriend, Lamara Bell,” it read.
“We would like to say thanks for all the support we have received from friends, family and the community.”
The PIRC also released a statement on behalf of Ms Bell’s family which was addressed to Mr Yuill and his family.
It read: “With our deepest sympathy. For those we’ve loved and lost. We can never be more than a thought apart.
“For as long as they live in our memory they live on in our hearts.
“May friends comfort you, faith uphold you and loving memories heal your heart.”
A review of police call handling was ordered by justice secretary Michael Matheson following the couple’s deaths, with its findings due to be published by the end of October.
Ms Bell is due to be laid to rest on Friday following a humanist service at Camelon Crematorium Hall.
