A man has been left in a critical condition by an attack in which his mother was also seriously injured.
The 41-year-old man and his 64-year-old mother were assaulted in Buchanan Crescent, Hamilton, at around 9pm on Tuesday, police said.
The man suffered a serious head injury and is in Hairmyres hospital, East Kilbride.
The woman received injuries to her head, arm and face but was released from hospital after treatment.
Detectives said a number of people were involved in the assault and that they are treating the attack on the man as attempted murder and the attack on his mother as serious assault.
The man was involved in a disturbance in the same street earlier in the evening, according to police.
Detective Chief Inspector Pat Campbell said: “We’re continuing extensive inquiries into this incident which resulted in a man sustaining life-threatening injuries, and his mother also sustaining serious injuries in the incident, both of which required emergency hospital treatment.
“Our early inquiries have revealed that there was a disturbance earlier in the evening on Buchanan Crescent involving the 41-year-old man, and during this incident he was also assaulted.”
Officers are conducting door-to-door inquiries in the area and are appealing for any witnesses who were in or around Buchanan Crescent between 8.45pm and 9pm yesterday to call them on 101.
