A new £11.5 million primary school in Whitfield has been given the go-ahead by Dundee councillors.
The council’s development quality committee unanimously approved planning permission for a three-stream primary school on land northwest of Summerfield Avenue.
It will replace Whitfield and Newfields primaries, as well as the Whitfield Community Early Years Centre.
A resident told the committee he was objecting to the application but was not against the principle of a new school being built on the site.
He said his concern was the development would mean the removal of 135 trees which had been there for many years, and that there had been no proper assessment of the effect of a new road to access the school.
In a report recommending approval of the application, city development director Mike Galloway said the new school would have 21 classrooms, 80 nursery places, a dining/assembly hall, a gym hall and children’s unit.
It is anticipated around 700 primary pupils and younger children will attend.
Mr Galloway said more trees would be planted than were to be felled and vehicular access to the school would be taken from a new spine road, which is integral to the regeneration of Whitfield.
Outside the school there is to be 3500 square metres of playground space, an orchard and a seven-a-side football pitch, with car parks to north and west of the school.
A 2m welded mesh security fence will enclose the school and 1.2m railings will separate the playground from the access road and the car parks.
Mr Galloway said consultation events about the school had been held involving the local community, parents and carers of pupils.
“The events were attended by 150 people,” he said. “No adverse comments or suggestions were received from participants.”
