Two men have been convicted of the first murder in the Western Isles for more than 40 years.
Liam Aitchison, 16, was found dead in a derelict building in the Steinish area of Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis in November 2011.
Johnathon MacKinnon and Stefan Millar, both from Carloway on Lewis and both aged 22, were found guilty of murder at the High Court in Glasgow on Monday.
Liam, originally from South Uist, worked and socialised with Millar and MacKinnon after he moved to Stornoway.
Detective Inspector Andy Logan, who led the investigation, said the murder has shocked the island.
Mr Logan said: “My thoughts are with Liam Aitchison’s family at this difficult time and my hope is that the convictions today will provide some form of closure for them.
“Liam would have just celebrated his 18th birthday this month had he not been murdered. He was a 16-year-old who had his whole life in front of him and enjoyed the support of a small number of persons locally.
“Unfortunately, Liam fell into the company of Johnathon MacKinnon and Stefan Millar, believing them to be his friends and placing his trust in them.
“They completely betrayed this trust and, in a most brutal and callous way, they killed him in a senseless and sustained attack with weapons. Neither has expressed any remorse.”
