People are being urged to ditch the car for short journeys and get active to help save the environment.
Walking and cycling short distances is being encouraged by the new Active Travel campaign.
One in three car journeys in Scotland are under two miles long and nearly one in four of all vehicle trips are under a mile, the Scottish Government said.
The campaign highlights the fact that adopting a healthier alternative can improve the environment and boost a person’s well-being.
An app has been created for people to track their journeys and see the benefits of leaving the car at home in calories burned and emissions saved.
Scottish Environment Minister Paul Wheelhouse said: “We’re all in the habit of jumping in the car for short trips that we could easily walk or cycle.
“Mile for mile, it’s the short car journeys that create the most carbon emissions and, with one in three car journeys made in Scotland being under two miles and nearly a quarter of all trips under a mile, it’s vitally important that steps are taken to encourage people, where possible, to make active travel choices.
“This campaign aims to do just that.”
Businesses and schools across the country are participating in Walk to Work and Walk to School weeks this month.
