Dunblane is enjoying a business boom thanks to the Andy Murray effect.
Just two years ago the town’s businesses faced a bleak future as they struggled to attract new customers but its favourite son’s success means the High Street is buzzing with visitors and shops are busier than ever.
Resident and tennis coach Cameron McMillan said he had really noticed a difference in the town since Murray became a household name.
He said: “A couple of years ago the shops were close to closing down but then Andy brought a lot of interest to the town. All the businesses on the High Street are now doing brilliantly.”
The turning point came when Murray won the Olympic gold, securing an iconic landmark in the shape of a golden postbox.
The luxurious paint job has transformed the box into a major attraction.
As the closest shop to the postbox, David Bennett and Son has been enjoying the increased exposure.
Butcher Stewart McClymont said: “People pass by and they all stop to get their photo taken. We always get the best of our business on the back of that.
“I certainly notice that when Andy’s playing, we are especially busy.
“It’s always been a nice place to come and visit and a nice area to live in, but there’s no doubt that he has put a good spin on things.
“He’s the first thing people think of when you mention Dunblane.”
As the town marked his Wimbledon victory, well-wishers came from across Scotland and even as far away as Manila in the Philippines to see where he grew up.
Many of them remarked on the stunning setting and made their way along the High Street to see what was on offer.
Lorna Brown, a cartoonist who works part-time at the Point, said businesses have flourished.
“This has been great for the town,” she said. “It’s been good for all the shops and there’s a bit of a buzz in the streets now.
“I think it will get even busier over the summer as people will see Dunblane on the television and think that it seems like somewhere they would like to visit.”
