A nine-year-old boy was approached by two men who asked him to get in their car, police say.
The child was on his way home from school on his scooter when the black vehicle pulled up next to him on Baberton Mains Hill in Edinburgh.
He refused to get in the car, which is said to have been small to medium sized with scratches on the rear, and ran home to tell his parents.
The incident took place on Friday between 12.10pm and 12.20pm.
Officers from Lothian and Borders Police are trying to trace the men as a matter of urgency to find out why they stopped the boy.
The car’s passenger is described as being dark-skinned, with dark hair which was greying around the temples and a dark moustache.
He was wearing a fluorescent yellow/green adidas tracksuit top with black stripes down the sleeves and had a black tattoo of a ring on his left index finger.
The only description available of the driver is that he was also dark-skinned.
The car is said to have had a black interior with red stripes and furry dice hanging on the rear view mirror.
