The pregnant Countess of Strathearn has said she had been learning to knit ahead of her baby’s arrival.
Kate, wearing a tartan outfit for the first day of a two-day visit to Scotland, made the comment as she thanked a well-wisher for presenting her with a woollen hat, babygro and teddy bear.
The countess told 17-year-old Caitlin Coffield, a resident of Glasgow’s Southside: “I’ve been trying to knit and I’m really bad. I should be asking for tips.”
Accepting the gifts, she added: “It’s very sweet of you. I’ll keep it safe for the big day.”
She was speaking as she visited the Quarriers Stopover Project, which provides short-term accommodation and support to 16 to 25-year-olds, with the Earl of Strathearn.
Kate later turned producer as she called “cut” during a filming session, one of several workshops available for youngsters at the centre. She reassured the camera-shy “actors” and applauded when they finished their pieces.
William, patron of Centrepoint, another charity that helps those sleeping rough, donned headphones to play DJ at the centre.
He was given a crash course in mixing on the decks and tried his hand at “scratching” but claimed it was harder than his day job flying a helicopter.
Earlier in the day, the couple visited Glasgow’s Emirates Arena, including the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, and watched riders in a practice session.
The couple watched pole vaulters, badminton players and witnessed a netball match at the arena.
They were also treated to a performance from the Glasgow 2014 mascot, Clyde, and his dance crew. Kate later met Clyde and his designer, 12-year-old Beth Gilmour, from Cumbernauld.
