Last of the highland wildfires put out

Firefighters had to work through the night to tackle a heath blaze near Fort William.

The last of the wildfires in the highlands has been extinguished.

Around 200 incidents were reported over the last 10 days in what was an “exceptional period of operational activity” for firefighters.

Helicopters were used as crews on the ground dealt with the wildfires and guarded property across the highlands and islands.

Earlier in the week firefighters worked through the night to bring under control a huge grassland blaze near Fort William.

The fire broke out on Monday on grassland and heath north of the B8004, stretching for around three miles (4.8km) which local MP Charles Kennedy described as unprecedented.

Scottish Fire and Rescue Service crews also worked round the clock to douse flames spreading across grassland in Achmore, near Kyle of Lochalsh. They were helped by two helicopters dropping large volumes of water directly on to the fire.

A spokesman said: “This has been a protracted and challenging incident and everyone involved can take great pride in the professionalism and dedication shown.

“Firefighters have been joined by landowners and land managers, with that close partnership instrumental in the significant progress that has been made.

“We are very grateful to the community for their support, especially to the employers who released our retained and community response crew members to deal with this incident and others across the Highlands and Islands.”
