Scotland cap given to Rangers legend Jim Baxter nets £10,000

A Scotland international cap given to Rangers footballer Jim Baxter in the 1960s has been auctioned for £10,000.
The cap, one of only five awarded to the midfielder, went under the hammer at a sports memorabilia sale in Glasgow.
Baxter, nicknamed Slim Jim, played 34 times for Scotland but received just five caps because the system at the time only awarded players one cap per season, regardless of the number of appearances.
He gave the cap away and it was sold on years later, although he made an unsuccessful attempt to reclaim it before he died aged 61 in 2001.
The cap, from the 1961-62 British Home Championship, was previously on display at Rangers’ Ibrox Stadium.
Brian Clements, from McTear’s Auctioneers, said: “There was a lot of interest in the cap from football fans and collectors alike and we’re delighted that it has achieved such a good price.”
