MORE THAN 10,000 people applied to be volunteers at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow within hours of a recruitment drive being launched.
Organisers want to find up to 15,000 people interested in unpaid Games Maker roles behind the scenes.
Some general roles will see volunteers welcome athletes, help out at the athletes’ village and at the games venues.
Valerie Mitchell, head of the games workforce, said: “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to take part in the biggest sporting event that Glasgow will ever host.
“You could be doing anything from distributing uniforms, you could possibly be in our Clyde mascot or you could be mixing with the athletes at the athletes’ village.”
Susan Egelstaff, a double Commonwealth medallist in badminton, said: “Rather than sitting at home watching it on the TV, in 18 months you could actually be involved in making it such a great experience for everyone.”
Kenny Boag (29), from Dennistoun in Glasgow, said he got interested in volunteering after seeing the launch at Central Station.
“It would be an experience, wouldn’t it?” he said. “Seeing all the different people, all the different cultures.
“It would be a good thing to do.”
Anyone interested in becoming a Games Maker has until February 28 to submit their application.
