Scottish politicians are being urged to do more to promote hydro electric schemes to increase renewable energy levels.
Scottish Renewables and the British Hydropower Association have launched a joint policy paper calling for better regulation of the industry, improved access to the electricity grid and financial incentives for new developments.
The paper says government action at Westminster and Holyrood is necessary to nearly double the current installed capacity for hydro and sustain 1400 jobs by 2020.
Johanna Yates, Scottish Renewables hydro policy officer said, “To realise the economic, climate change and energy security benefits hydro power will bring we must see a political commitment to make the regulatory and fiscal frameworks fit for purpose.
“Environmental regulations need to protect the environment but not stifle hydro developments unnecessarily, while uncertainty around financial incentives and access charges to the grid can also create risk around new projects limiting our potential.”
David Williams, chief executive of the British Hydropower Association, said, “Development in Scotland is key to meeting hydro generation targets so we urge the Scottish Government to refine the regulatory landscape in order to realise the potential.”
