Jets from closure-threatened RAF Leuchars will take part in a fly-past at the royal wedding.

Typhoons from the 6 Squadron will pass over Buckingham Palace at 1.30pm, after the wedding service.

A further Typhoon will, at the same time, pass over the celebrations taking place in St Andrews where Prince William and Kate Middleton’s romance blossomed at university.

The Courier understands that, weather permitting, the London flypast will initially consist of the Battle of Britain memorial flight. A Lancaster, Spitfire and Hurricane will be involved.

Thirty seconds later two Typhoons from RAF Leuchars and two Tornado GR4s from RAF Coningsby will follow in a tight box formation.

Officer commanding 6 Squadron Wing, Commander Roddy Dennis, said it promised to be a great event for those involved and a proud chapter in the history of 6 Squadron.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for the personnel of 6 Squadron to take part in a historic occasion,” Commander Dennis said. “We are honoured and proud to be participating in the event.”

Air Commodore Harry Atkinson, air officer for Scotland and station commander at RAF Leuchars, is similarly thrilled.

“It is a privilege for 6 Squadron to represent RAF Leuchars and the Royal Air Force in Scotland in celebrating such a prestigious occasion,” he said. “Weather permitting, an additional Typhoon aircraft from RAF Leuchars will pass over the St Andrews royal wedding celebrations simultaneously to the official flypast in London.”

The fast jet element of the formation comprising the two Leuchars Typhoons and the two Tornado GR4s rehearsed their formation for the flypast at RAF Coningsby on Wednesday.

The squadron reformed at Leuchars last September. It is responsible for the delivery of the northern element of Britain’s quick reaction alert (QRA) service.

QRA represents RAF Leuchars’ first priority and requires Typhoon aircraft to scramble and intercept unidentified aircraft approaching UK airspace at any time, countering any airborne terrorist threat.
