The computer games industry will receive another £35-million-a-year boost today as major tax reliefs come into force.
Following a UK Government battle with the European Commission, British companies will now begin to benefit from payback on their production costs.
Dundee is seen by many as the beating heart of the industry and Chief Secretary to the Treasury Danny Alexander told The Courier the new law would be a big boost for the city.
He said: “Obviously this is hugely important to the video games sector in Dundee.
“Dundee is one of the most important centres of video games production in the whole of the UK and is actually an internationally-renowned centre.”
The Liberal Democrat MP added: “This is a rapidly growing sector around the world and there are other countries competing for this business.
“We have a number of advantages in the UK and in Scotland.
“We have got some brilliant people first and foremost, some great talent, we have got a very innovative culture so some new ideas and businesses being formed, we have universities like Abertay University that are really at the cutting edge of this and I think with this tax regime we also have a very competitive tax system.
“So I hope it won’t just help the companies already here, it will also help to bring investment to Dundee and the UK.”
