The conduct of two police officers will be investigated after a man was hit by a car after apparently running across a major road.
The collision happened on the southbound carriageway of the A1, near Washington services, Tyne and Wear.
The man, who had been spoken to by officers from Northumbria Police after his van was involved in an accident with a lorry, was struck by a car after reportedly running across the carriageway.
He suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital in a critical condition.
The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) said it would be looking into the incident, which took place at around 9.50pm on Saturday, August 10.
Cindy Butts, the IPCC’s Commissioner for the Northumbria policing area, said: “As someone has been seriously injured following police contact an independent investigation is needed to establish what took place.”
Police are also continuing to investigate both collisions and are seeking the driver of the car, who did not stop after hitting the man.
