A scandal-hit former Tayside surgeon is being investigated by a top UK university as he continues to jet around the globe on speaking engagements.
Liverpool University wants to know why Muftah Salem Eljamel appears to be “giving the impression that he works there”.
The probe was sparked after the university’s name was listed beside Mr Eljamel’s name on his CV and attached to material for conferences in Spain and the US.
The university’s records show Mr Eljamel was awarded a Doctor of Medicine with distinction in 1992, but that appears to have been his last involvement with the institution.
A university spokesman said: “We wouldn’t expect him to still be using our name in such a way as to imply he is employed here.”
He added: “We do not currently employ Dr Eljamel and he does not hold an honorary appointment.
“We will therefore be making contact with him in order to clarify his relationship with the university.”
Mr Eljamel was suspended in 2014 after a patient had surgery on the wrong spinal disc at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee.
Since then more people have said they were left with long-term health difficulties after surgery and accident claims solicitors have also been dealing with more than 100 cases.
Mr Eljamel retired from NHS Tayside and subsequently gave up his licence to practise in August ahead of a hearing to decide if he should be struck off.
The 59-year-old who recently spoke at the Harbin International Neurosurgical Forum at the Wanda Royal Hotel in China remains an editorial board member of OMICS International, an interactive open access journal for the communication of all scientific and medical research.
Mr Eljamel’s CV on the OMICS website states he is a professor at the department of neuroscience at Liverpool University.
Documents seen by The Courier for upcoming conferences in Madrid and Atlanta, Georgia, also have Liverpool University listed beside Mr Eljamel’s name.
Former patient Pat Kelly from Dundee said: “I am totally speechless at this news.
“While we suffer everyday from horrific symptoms of botched surgery this man travels the world and is making vast sums of money on the speaking tour.
“He’s been to the Copacabana beach and now to China in the past year and I doubt that he travelled in economy class.
“Some of his victims have difficulty leaving the house never mind boarding an aeroplane.”
Mr Eljamel was unable to be reached for comment.
He has previously declined to return calls, emails or messages left for him since his initial suspension in February 2014.
