Comedian Freddie Starr has been re-bailed until October by police investigating alleged sexual offences.
The 70-year-old was first arrested last November by detectives from Operation Yewtree, the national investigation prompted by abuse claims against Jimmy Savile.
Starr was re-arrested in April when further allegations against him emerged. He was due to answer police bail this week, but has instead been re-bailed until October. The performer has consistently denied any wrongdoing.
In June, when he was also re-bailed, his solicitor Dean Dunham said: “Mr Starr has maintained his innocence throughout and has assisted the police with their inquiries at all times.
“We are hopeful that the police inquiries are drawing close to a conclusion, at which time Mr Starr will be able to confirm that he has publicly cleared his good name and reputation.”
Operation Yewtree is being run in three strands – one involving claims against Savile, one against Savile and others, and the third allegations involving others.
Starr’s arrest in November concerned allegations involving Savile and others, while the April re-arrest was over claims with no link to the late television presenter.
Scotland Yard did not name the performer, but released a statement to say: “On November 1 2012 officers from Operation Yewtree arrested a man in his 60s in connection with the investigation.
“The man, from Warwickshire, was arrested on suspicion of sexual offences and taken into custody locally. He was later bailed to return in August pending further inquiries.
“He has now been re-bailed to return pending further inquiries.”
