More than two million people have already used a special button on Facebook to share the news that they have voted in the general election.
The tool has been used in European elections in the past, as well as the last three US presidential elections.
Facebook also says it believes it can have a positive effect on voter turnout, quoting a study carried out in 2012 by science journal Nature that found that 300,000 people went to the polls in the US because they saw news of their friends voting on the social network.
Twitter too is pushing the election, with the hashtag #IVoted, and a prompt appearing at the top of the screen so users can quickly share the news that they had been to the polling station.
The social media giant, which has more than 1.4 billion monthly active users globally, also said that the most discussed election issue is the economy.
