The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have given the world the first glimpse of the royal baby.

Emerging on to the steps of the Lindo Wing of St Mary’s Hospital in London shortly after 7pm, Kate and William looked happy and relaxed as they showed the Prince of Cambridge to the ranks of photographers gathered outside.

The couple then walked forward to speak to reporters and describe their feelings.

A cheerful William said his son had “a good pair of lungs on him”.

He also said the couple were “still working on a name.”

Asked for her feelings, the Duchess said they were “very emotional .. like any parent.”

William also joked about the baby’s hair, saying he had more than his father.

The couple then returned inside before emerging with the prince in a car seat, before William himself drove the family off to Kensington Palace.

Excitement had been at fever pitch since the announcement that the Duchess had given birth to a boy at 4.24pm on Monday.

She was visited on Tuesday afternoon by her parents Carole and Michael, who said the newborn was “absolutely beautiful”.

Later, William’s father Prince Charles and wife Camilla arrived, with Charles describing the third in line to the throne as “marvellous”.
