Jack White steps in to save Detroit’s famous Masonic Temple
ByThe Courier Reporter
Musician Jack White has paid a $142,000 (£93,000) tax bill for Detroit’s Masonic Temple to prevent a threatened auction of the famed venue where The Who and the Rolling Stones once played.
The 14-storey venue was days away from being put up for sale until last Thursday, when a then anonymous donor paid off its entire 2010-2012 tax bill.
The building, which is on America’s National Register of Historic Places, takes up a street and has more than 1,000 rooms, as well as a theatre that has featured top performers for decades.
