The teenage suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings was taken into custody in a suburb of the city, police have said.
Gunfire was heard as Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, was reportedly found hiding in a boat in a backyard in Watertown.
The ethnic Chechen’s elder brother, Tamerlan, was killed in a shootout with police earlier after a night of violence in which the pair killed a university police officer and hurled explosives at police in a car chase and gun battle.
For much of Friday, Boston was in lockdown, with movement and public transport restricted. The brothers from Dagestan have been in the US for about a decade, their uncle Ruslan Tsarni said.
Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, known as suspect 1, was seen in surveillance footage in a black baseball hat. Authorities gave no details on how Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, Suspect 2, escaped.
An aunt of the suspects said the older brothers recently became a devout Muslim. The endgame for Suspect 1 came just hours afte the FBI released photos and video of the two men at the marathon’s finish line.
