Doctor Who star Mandip Gill has said she chose to ignore criticism of Jodie Whittaker as the first female Doctor, saying: “You can’t please everyone.”
The actress, who plays the Thirteenth Doctor’s companion Yasmin “Yaz” Khan, also said she hopes Whittaker’s well-received debut as the hero last week will have won over doubters.
Gill, who was attending the Bafta Cymru awards in Cardiff on Sunday night, said: “There were negative people on social media but Jodie doesn’t use it so she doesn’t read that stuff.
“She’s expressed that she’s been overwhelmed by the reaction and how many people watched the first episode.
“But you can never please everyone. There is always going to be people upset that it was a woman, but you just hope they watch it and say, ‘She actually is the Doctor’.
“But then you can’t please everyone so there’s no point thinking about the negative people and forgetting about the people that have come on board and also the old fans.”
