Idris Elba’s daughter Isan has been named as the 2019 Golden Globe Ambassador.
The 16-year-old takes over the title – which was formerly known as Miss Golden Globe – from Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s daughter Simone Garcia, The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) said on Wednesday.
Isan, whose mother is Elba’s ex-wife Hanne “Kim” Norgaard, will be escorting winners on and off the stage at the Golden Globes in January, as well as carrying the statuettes.
Isan revealed she would be focusing on mental health as part of philanthropic efforts associated with the role.
She said: “I feel honoured to hold this title and use this role to not only further educate people on the work of the HFPA, but also shine a light on issues that I care about.
“Mental health, specifically among African Americans and my peers in particular, is something I really want to be more vocal about. There’s this perceived stigma and I’ve seen friends struggle. We need to empower young people to not be afraid to ask for help.”
The role is usually given to the son or daughter of a famous performer.
Sylvester Stallone’s daughters Sophia, Sistine and Scarlet were the Miss Golden Globe trio in 2017.
Other previous ambassadors include Jamie Foxx’s daughter Corinne; Greer Grammer, daughter of Frasier star Kelsey Grammer; Sosie Bacon, daughter of Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick; and Francesca Eastwood, daughter of Clint Eastwood and Frances Fisher.
The name of the role changed last year to be “more inclusive”.
HFPA president Meher Tatna introduced Isan as the ambassador at The Four Seasons in Los Angeles.
She said: “Last year, the HFPA renamed the title to represent a more inclusive role that was not only gender-neutral but also spoke to the HFPA’s commitment to philanthropy.
“However, we are continuing to stand by the tradition that the honouree is the daughter or son of a well-known actor.”
The Golden Globes take place on January 6.
