British stars Olivia Colman, Christian Bale, Rachel Weisz and Richard E Grant are celebrating after receiving Oscar nominations.
During a ceremony in Los Angeles on Tuesday, Colman’s regal black comedy The Favourite and Alfonso Cuaron’s black-and-white epic Roma each picked up 10 nods, more than any other film.
They are both nominated in the best picture category, alongside A Star Is Born, Black Panther, BlacKkKlansman, Bohemian Rhapsody, Vice and Green Book.
Norwich-born Colman earned a best actress nod for her starring role in The Favourite, while Bale was recognised in the actor category for his portrayal of controversial former US vice president Dick Cheney in Vice.
Bale, already an Academy Award winner for 2010’s The Fighter, is up against Bradley Cooper for A Star Is Born, Willem Dafoe for At Eternity’s Gate, Rami Malek for Bohemian Rhapsody, and Viggo Mortensen in Green Book.
Colman is in a category alongside Glenn Close for The Wife, Lady Gaga for A Star Is Born, Yalitza Aparicio for Roma, and Melissa McCarthy for Can You Ever Forgive Me?
It is veteran actress Close’s seventh nomination and she is yet to win.
Colman’s The Favourite co-star Weisz also picked up a nod in the supporting actress category.
She is up against Amy Adams for Vice, Marina de Tavira for Roma, Regina King for If Beale Street Could Talk, and Emma Stone, also for The Favourite.
Grant is nominated in the best supporting actor category for Can You Ever Forgive Me? He is up against Sam Rockwell for Vice, Adam Driver for BlacKkKlansman, Sam Elliott for A Star Is Born, and Mahershala Ali for Green Book.
British stars missing out include Claire Foy for First Man and Emily Blunt for Mary Poppins Returns.
The Academy Of Motion Picture Arts And Sciences this year selected eight films for best picture, down from nine 12 months ago.
Roma’s nod is Netflix’s first in the best picture category while Black Panther is Marvel’s maiden nomination.
Spike Lee earned his first directing nod from the Academy in the best director category for BlacKkKlansman.
He is up against Cold War’s Pawel Pawlikowski, The Favourite’s Yorgos Lanthimos, Roma’s Alfonso Cuaron and Adam McKay for Vice.
Roma, from Mexico, is also nominated for best foreign language film, joined by Lebanon’s Capernaum, Poland’s Cold War, Germany’s Never Look Away and Japan’s Shoplifters.
In the animated feature film category, Incredibles 2 is up against Isle Of Dogs, Mirai, Ralph Breaks The Internet and Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse.
Mexican film-maker Cuaron is also nominated in the cinematography category, alongside Lukasz Zal for Cold War, Robbie Ryan for The Favourite, Caleb Deschanel for Never Look Away, and Matthew Libatique for A Star Is Born.
Period drama The Favourite picked up another nod for costume design, as did Black Panther, The Ballad Of Buster Scruggs, Mary Poppins Returns and Mary Queen Of Scots.
Original score is between Black Panther, BlacKkKlansman, If Beale Street Could Talk, Isle Of Dogs and Mary Poppins Returns.
Gaga picked up another nod for best original song for Shallow, from A Star Is Born, along with co-writers Mark Ronson, Anthony Rossomando and Andrew Wyatt.
They are up against All The Stars from Black Panther, I’ll Fight from RBG, The Place Where Lost Things Go from Mary Poppins Returns, and When A Cowboy Trades His Spurs For Wings from The Ballad Of Buster Scruggs.
Documentary feature includes Free Solo, RBG, Of Fathers And Sons, Minding The Gap and Hale County This Morning, This Evening.
The short subject category nominations are Black Sheep, End Game, Lifeboat, A Night At The Garden and Period. End Of Sentence.
Editing is between BlacKkKlansman, Bohemian Rhapsody, The Favourite, Green Book and Vice.
Vice, which saw Bale don prosthetics to play Cheney, is also nominated for hair and make-up, along with Border and Mary Queen Of Scots.
The best sound mixing category is between Black Panther, Bohemian Rhapsody, First Man, Roma and A Star Is Born.
The nominations were announced on Tuesday by Tracee Ellis Ross and Kumail Nanjiani.
The 91st Academy Awards will take place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on February 24.
