A teenager who was badly injured while sledging remains critically ill in hospital, police said today.
Liam Stafford (16) hit a tree in Flatts Lane Country Park, Normanby, Middlesbrough, at 1pm on Sunday.
He was flown by the Great North East Air Ambulance to the James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough suffering from head injuries.
Cleveland Police appealed for witnesses as a spokeswoman described his condition as critical but stable.
The teenager plays for North Ormesby FC Under-16s where he is a centre-half.
On a normal Sunday afternoon Liam nicknamed Scotty because his parents are from Scotland would be on the football pitch, but the match was cancelled because of the weather.
Team manager Kev Brownell said: “He is a popular lad and the boys are all friends. They have all grown up together. All the lads are in shock. I am sending him my best wishes, and to his family too.”
