Evan Rachel Wood has shared a photo of self-inflicted wounds on her arm, telling fans she was once in an abusive relationship and used to self-harm.
The Westworld star, 31, posted the image on Twitter on Monday with the hashtag #IAmNotOk, which raises awareness of domestic violence.
Wood told her 421,000 followers: “2 years into my abusive relationship I resorted to self harm.
“When my abuser would threaten or attack me, I cut my wrist as a way to disarm him.
“It only made the abuse stop temporarily.
“At that point I was desperate to stop the abuse and I was too terrified to leave. #IAmNotOk .”
Wood also tweeted about a photoshoot, saying she had been so upset that day that she “fell into a pool of tears and was sent home”.
Several people responded to Wood’s posts by opening up about their own experiences.
Game Of Thrones actress Esme Bianco shared an image on Instagram showing marks on her back.
“This is my back,” she said.
“The injuries you see are real.
“The whipping that gave me these wounds was filmed in the name of ‘art’.
“I used to look at this photo with pride because I thought it was a sign of great devotion to my abuser.
“Now I look at it with horror.
“Despite the many years that have passed since this happened my night terrors and PTSD symptoms continue to get worse. I am a domestic violence survivor and #IAmNotOk.”
Sharing another image of herself smiling, she said: “This photo was taken on my birthday many years ago.
“The night before I had been locked in the bedroom alone and had not slept.
“I was surviving on very little food and was physically and mentally exhausted – I often wasn’t allowed to sleep.
“In this photo my boyfriend is giving me my birthday present.
“Despite the plastered on smile I can see the emptiness and fear in my eyes.
“We went for dinner later and he spent the whole evening berating me because he didn’t want to go out. I was not ok then and #IAmNotOk now.”
