Delays and disruption caused by a train derailment in Edinburgh on Wednesday evening caused many commuters a major headache for much of the day on Thursday.
The incident, which happened as a train was moving through Princes Street Gardens at around 6pm on Wednesday, sparked many timetable changes and cancellations for people travelling in and out of the capital, with the problems lasting throughout the day.
Passengers arriving at stations across the region who had not heard the news discovered they could expect short notice alterations, cancellations and delays, and were asked to use help points at stations or speak to staff.
The derailed train was travelling from Cowdenbeath to Edinburgh Waverley station when it came off the tracks. There were no reports of injuries.
Engineers spent most of the morning assessing the situation to determine damage to the train and rails, while the Rail Accident Investigation Branch said it would investigate the cause of the accident.
To allow the removal of the derailed train, no services ran into or out of Waverley station via Princes Street Gardens after 9pm on Thursday. All services to the west and north of Edinburgh started and terminated at Haymarket instead.
In an update this morning, ScotRail confirms the derailed train has been removed and says services are getting back to normal today “with a few early morning exceptions.”
