Dundee United’s oldest surviving former director, Denys Carnegie, has died at the age of 84 after a long illness.
The Carnegie family has had a long connection with the club, dating back to 1923, and four generations have sat on the board at Tannadice.
Mr Carnegie was educated at Dundee High School before joining the family construction company John Carnegie & Son Ltd.
The family’s involvement with Dundee United began when the firm was contracted to carry out renovation work at Tannadice, leading to Mr Carnegie’s grandfather, father and uncle taking seats on the board at various times.
He joined the board in 1951 and saw United through a difficult decade, which culminated in the formation of Taypools and the turnaround of the club’s fortunes.
The most recent member of the family to become involved with the club was Mr Carnegie’s son Scott, who served as finance director and briefly as chairman before stepping down from the board in 2007.
Mr Carnegie was a member of Panmure Golf Club and had held the post of fabric convener at St Luke’s and Queen Street Church in Broughty Ferry.
He is survived by wife Mori, sons Scott and Grant and grandchildren Glenn, Sasha, Gilly and Lorna.
