Ernest McLaren, a master painter and decorator from Monifieth and veteran of the battle of Arnhem in the Second World War, has died. He was 89.
Mr McLaren was born and raised in Broughty Ferry and joined the army as a teenager at the start of the war.
In 1944, as a lance corporal in the First Airborne Division of the 7th Battalion of the King’s Own Scottish Borderers (Red Berets), he took part in the battle of Arnhem.
He was captured by the Nazis and held in a prison-of-war camp in Czechoslovakia until the end of the war.
Mr McLaren returned to Scotland and trained as a painter and decorator, eventually setting up his own business in Monifieth, which he ran until his retirement.
Predeceased by his wife Agnes, he is survived by his sons Richard and Michael, daughters-in-law Norma and Valerie, three grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
