Vera Gairns was born and brought up in Broughty Ferry, where she attended Eastern Primary School and Grove Academy. She worked for an employment agency based in Dundee before working for Scottish & Southern Energy, parent company of Scottish Hydro-Electric. She spent 30 years at Grampian House in Perth, a commute that required Miss Gairns to catch three buses to work each day. She received an MBE in December 2002 and retired four months later. Miss Gairns is survived by her sister Irene and brother-in-law Colin Coull.
