Former Dundee doctor, football club director and community figurehead Dr Harry Leadbitter has died.
Dr Leadbitter passed away in the early hours of Thursday morning following a battle with cancer.
Born in Durham in 1939, he moved to Scotland to study medicine at St Andrews University’s Queen’s College now part of Dundee University.
It was during his student years that he met his future wife Sheena, who he married in 1963.
Graduating in 1966, he joined Tayside Police as a surgeon, working there until the early 1970s when he became a GP in Dundee at practices in Derwent Street and Hillbank.
During his time as a local doctor he branched out into other areas of societal work, becoming an original member of the Children’s Panel, the vice-chairman of Dundee United Football Club and, more recently, assistant district governor with Dundee Rotary Club.
Medicine remained his first love, however, and Dr Leadbitter acted as director of primary care with Tayside Primary Care NHS Trust between 1994 and 2003, as well as acting as medical adviser to local firms such as Timex and Michelin.
He is survived by his wife Sheena, daughters Karen and Katrina, and grandchildren Joe, Mary, Andrew and Stewart.
Paying tribute to her husband, Mrs Leadbitter said, “He was a very family-oriented man and he was very proud of his daughters and four grandchildren.”
Dr Leadbitter’s funeral service will take place at Dundee Crematorium at 11am on June 14. All are welcome.
