A minute’s silence at Arbroath’s Gayfield ground marked the recent death of former player James (Jim) Clyne at the age of 83.
Mr Clyne’s son, Fraser, and grandson, Christopher, were at the match against Albion Rovers on Saturday, where the 612-strong crowd paused to remember the striker prior to kick-off.
In a short career, he played for both Arbroath FC and Arbroath Victoria in the early 1950s and was at the centre of a dispute between the Scottish Football Association and the Scottish Junior Football Association in 1951.
He had appeared for Arbroath on league duty as a trialist while signed to the Vics, and when the junior side named him in the line-up for a cup match there was a complaint from the opposition.
The upshot saw him miss nearly a year of football before signing permanently for Arbroath, then moving on to a brief spell at Forfar Athletic.
Mr Clyne is also survived by wife of nearly 59 years, Ida, his daughter-in-law, Susan, and his other grandchildren, Katie and Stephanie.Dux scholarBorn in Glen Esk, he was raised on farms in Angus and the Mearns where his father worked, attending Stracathro and St Cyrus schools, was awarded a dux medal at the latter, then moved on to Mackie Academy.
In 1943 he joined the Merchant Navy at the age of 16 as a wireless operator, having trained for the position in Dundee.
During the war he experienced many hazardous convoy operations and was seconded to the US Navy for the Normandy D-Day landings, with his vessel involved at Omaha beach.
Mr Clyne left the service in 1947 after contracting malaria on a long trip to west Africa, returning to live near Guthrie in Angus.
There he met Ida, who lived in nearby Friockheim, and the couple were married in 1952.
At that time he was working for agricultural engineering firm Reekie’s in Arbroath, where he became parts manager and continued to serve the company in this capacity, and as a key buyer, for almost 45 years.
Following his retirement in the early 1990s, Mr Clyne continued to live in Arbroath and enjoyed travelling to various destination, including Hawaii, with his wife.
