Lifelong golfer and former Shell director Bill Wood

An East Neuk man who collapsed on the golf course died doing what he loved, his wife has said.

Bill Wood (81), who was born in Cellardyke, died on the 17th tee while enjoying a round near his home in Yorkshire.

He had been a golfing enthusiast all his life and was a member of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club in St Andrews as well as the Golf House Club in Elie.

Although he latterly lived on a farm near the city of York with second wife Jennifer Hetherington, he regularly returned to stay in Elie.

“I think it’s ideal and was what he would have wanted,” said Ms Hetherington. “He was doing something he loved.”

Mr Wood went to Waid Academy then studied natural philosophy at St Andrews University.

He spent all his working life employed by Shell. Mr Wood’s job took him around the world and he eventually became a director of the company.

While in London he attended events as a member of The Caledonian Club. During a club lunch he had his photograph taken with the Ryder Cup.

He met Ms Hetherington at an art exhibition in London in 2003 and the couple married in 2008. It would have been their third wedding anniversary next week.

Mr Wood suffered setbacks including a heart bypass, cancer and being confined to a wheelchair for four months after being run over by a golf buggy in France. However, just a month ago he was able to travel to America to see his son get married.

Mr Wood is survived by two children from his first marriage to the late Evelyn and four grandchildren.
