Former Arbroath SNP councillor John Allan has died at the age of 83.
Angus MP Mike Weir paid a warm tribute to the man who served on Arbroath Town Council from 1971-75 and who subsequently represented Arbroath East ward on Tayside Regional Council during the 1980s.
Mr Weir said, “John was a fine and gentle man who would help anybody.
“He will be sorely missed by those of us who knew him.”
Mr Allan was educated at Ladyloan Primary School and Arbroath High School.
He was an electrician in the town before being called up to the Royal Air Force for his national service.
He later joined Keith Blackman in the plate shop, where he stayed until its closure.
Thereafter Mr Allan worked with the Co-op as a caretaker in the Abbeygate Shopping Centre.
A founder member of the Arbroath branch of the Scottish National Party in 1966, he was a hard-working stalwart across Angus until illness forced him to stop late last year.
Angus Council honoured him in 2002 by naming a street in the Kirton area after him.
Mr Allan is survived by his sister Pat. He was pre-deceased by his wife Betty.
